Each year, MCC selects students from member colleges and universities across the state for their outstanding commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Three types of awards are given: the Outstanding Community Impact Award, the Commitment to Service Award, and the Heart and Soul Award. Awardees were selected from a nomination pool of nearly 900 students. This year, 192 students from 34 member campuses will receive awards.
“We were able to nominate up to 10 students who give back to the university in various ways,” said Sharmay Wood, associate director of LSSU Campus Life. “All schools in Michigan nominated students, so we were pleased to have four of ours recognized.”
Lance Boehmer, a junior from Harbor Beach, received the Commitment to Service Award. This award is given to one student per member campus for their commitment to community service. Only 34 students received this award. Boehmer is the student director of the LSSU Activities Board and a member of Student Organization for Diversity and Communication Alliance.
Peter DeKraker, Carrie McBride, and Elizabeth Rink received the Heart and Soul Award. This award is given to students to recognize their time, effort and personal commitment through service.
DeKraker, from McBain, is the Finance Committee chair with the LSSU Presidents Council, as well as a member of Student Alumni Involved for Lake State and a resident advisor in Brady Hall, the LSSU freshmen men’s residence.
McBride, of Caro, works in the LSSU Volunteer Center and is a resident advisor in Osborn Hall, the LSSU freshmen women’s residence.
Rink, of Traverse City, is the LSSU Volunteer Center coordinator.
MCC’s college and university presidents are committed to fulfilling the public purpose of higher education. The group promotes the education and commitment of the state’s college students to be engaged citizens through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
