Barbara Ann McKiddie, age 79, of Cedarville, Michigan, died peacefully Thursday, July 19, 2012 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. Her husband of 59 years, Bert McKiddie was the last to say good-bye by singing to her.
Barbara was born to Mervin Herbert Nixon and Pearl Susannah Mae McConkey Nixon on January 5, 1933 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
Barbara was raised in Pickford where she graduated from Pickford High School. She found employment with the Gerrie Press in Sault Ste. Marie. She arrived for her first day of work and met fellow employee Bert McKiddie. It was love at first sight and they were married July 24, 1953. Bert was inducted into the Army in August of 1953 and they were stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado where Bert played hockey for the U.S. Army hockey team. After the army, Barbara and Bert moved back to Pickford to raise their family. Barbara worked for her father at Nixon’s Garage part of the time and then went to work full time in the office at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. She worked for 23 years for Oaklawn until her retirement in 1998.
Barbara and Bert spent their retirement years enjoying winters in Brooksville Florida, and summers at their cabin on Smith’s Bay in Cedarville, Michigan.
Barbara was a member of the Pickford United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women’s Organization. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau in Pickford, the Good Sams Club, the Arcade Bowling Alley league, and the Pickford Square Dance Group.
Barbara loved to cook and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She liked to play dominoes and rook, as well as oil paint. She especially liked to go for walks with Bert.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Bert, two daughters; Tammy (Ron) Beacom of Sault Ste. Marie, and Vicki Konczak of Alpena, Michigan; and one son David (Chrissy) McKiddie of Belleville, Michigan. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Clark (Audrey) Beacom, Betsy (Jeremy) Speer, Taylor Konczak, Alex Konczak, Emily McKiddie, and Cameron McKiddie. Barbara is also survived by four great grandchildren: Mia Beacom, Margot Beacom, Beau Beacom, and Isabelle Speer. One brother, Frank (Judy) Nixon, of Pickford, also survives.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Phyllis Jeanne Nixon.
Services for Barbara will be held Tuesday July 24, 2012 at the First Church of Christ located at 300 West Spruce Street in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. till 12:00 Noon. The Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 noon. Entombment will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township, Michigan.
