NEWBERRY – The Rudyard Bulldogs scored early and often against the Newberry Indians on Tuesday in the process of sweeping a Straits Area Conference doubleheader. Rudyard took the first game 20-3 in five innings and put another five-inning win in the second game, 14-4.

In the opener, Mackenzie Gibson paced the Bulldog attack with three triples, while Kayla Coffey had three singles. Brittany Brown and Ashlee Bonnee both doubled and singled. Singles were recorded by Dominique Tremblay, Caitlyn MacDowell, Shiloh Spencer and Kasey Roe.

Cora VanSloten tossed a complete game two-hitter for the win. She struck out six in five innings.

Gibson continued her hot hitting in the second game with a double and a single, while driving in five runs. Tremblay had a double with a pair of RBIs, while VanSloten drove in three with a double. Roe singled in two runs, while Bonnee and Coffey also had hits.

On the mound, Bonnee went the distance allowing four hits and a walk, while striking out one.

“Our defense is improving every night out and we continue to get better at the little things,” said Rudyard coach Pat VanSloten. “With Pellston and ranked Hillman coming on Saturday we will continue to get tested and hopefully we will keep learning from our mistakes.”

Rudyard, 7-9, will play host to the Rudyard Invitational on Saturday.
