Deputies Sheriff’s from the Chippewa Co Sheriff’s Office were on a traffic stop on the I-75 Bus Spur, in the Sault Ste Marie area, just after 10 pm on 2-20-2020 when the incident occurred.
During the traffic stop a different vehicle crashed into the back passenger corner of the patrol vehicle. The suspect vehicle then slid up the passenger side of the patrol vehicle and into the snow bank.
Contributing factors were obviously the intoxication of the driver and the fact the windshield was completely ice covered. It appeared the driver had not attempted to clear off the windshield prior to driving.
Luckily both Deputy Sheriffs were in the patrol vehicle at the time of the crash or this may have been much worse.
Both Deputy Sheriffs self transported to WMH where they were treated and released.
Sault Ste Marie PD investigated the crash and ultimately arrested the driver for OWI.
The driver should be arraigned later this morning in the 91st District Court.
