Laker Hockey Announces 2019-20 Team Awards

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (LSSU)- The Lake Superior State hockey team announced the program’s annual awards for the 2019-20 season on Monday, March 30. 

Junior forward Chase Gamelin was named the recipient of the Gay Blade Award, which is awarded to the athlete who brings laughs, personality and humor to the locker room. Gamelin finished the season with a goal and two assists in 29 games. 

Forward Louis Boudon earned the team’s Outstanding Freshman Award. Boudon was third on the Lakers in points with 27 and ranked first among his teammates in assists with 21. The forward was named WCHA Rookie of the Week twice this season while also being named WCHA Rookie of the Month for February. Boudon was tied for second among WCHA freshmen in scoring and was seventh among all WCHA players in assists. Boudon, who was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team, posted two five-game point streaks this season as well as three three-point games.

Junior forward Yuki Miura was named the recipient of the Jim Howie Unsung Hero Award. Miura registered a career-high 14 points on two goals and 12 assists, also a career-best. Miura, a top penalty killer on the team, led all WCHA forwards in blocked shots with 34 and ranked fourth on the Lakers in the category. The forward appeared in all 41 games for the Lakers.

This year’s Most Improved Player was awarded to senior forward Brendan McKay. In his senior season, McKay posted a career-high four goals as he appeared in all 41 games for the Lakers. An alternate captain, McKay finished the season with seven points which included two shorthanded goals. McKay also ranked third on the team with 189 face-off wins and a face-off win percentage of .515%. 

Junior goaltender Roman Bengert received the Scholar-Athlete Award in recognition of his academic achievements. Bengert, a mathematics major, has a 4.0 grade point average. In his career, Bengert has been named to the LSSU Dean’s List, the WCHA All-Academic Team and a WCHA Scholar Athlete. On the ice, Bengert played in four games for the Lakers while starting three games. Bengert got his first career start in net on Oct. 25 at Notre Dame and recorded his first career win on Feb. 29 at Ferris State. 

Junior defenseman Lukas Kaelble was awarded the team’s Most Valuable Defenseman Award. Kaelble, an alternate captain, played in all 41 games for the Lakers this season. The defenseman tied his previous career high in goals with two, which included the game tying goal against Bemidji State on Nov. 30. Kaelble notched 10 assists for 12 points for the Lakers. The junior led the Lakers in blocked shots with 39. 

Senior forward Max Humitz received the Most Valuable Forward Award, Most Valuable Player Award and the Soo Blueliner Award. Humitz set career highs in goals with 22 and points with 35 while also adding 13 assists. The senior captain led the team in goals and points and was tied for second among all WCHA players in goals. Humitz, who was named to the All-WCHA Second Team, was tied for fourth among WCHA players in points as he reached the 30-point plateau for the second straight season. Humitz was tied for the team lead in power play goals and ranked second among his teammates in shorthanded goals. The forward led the team and all WCHA players in shots on goal with 159. Humitz posted 12 multi-point games throughout the season, four of which were multi-goal games. On Jan. 24, Humitz became the 51st Laker all-time to record 100 points and on Feb. 21, Humitz became the 22nd Laker all-time to reach 60 goals. A nominee for the Hobey Baker Award and a Top 10 Finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, Humitz ended his career as the WCHA’s No. 2 post-realignment goal-scorer with 64 goals. Humitz finished his career as a Laker with 111 points (64 goals, 47 assists) in 149 games.
