Lawrence “Duke” Leon Masse, age 84, of Cedarville, Michigan, died on March 13, 2020 in Petoskey, Michigan. He was born on September 16, 1935 in St. Paul, MN, to Hamel Ernest Masse and Agnes Celene Verschaeve Masse.
Duke grew up in Gladwin, Michigan. After high school he met and fell in love with Nancy Clore. They married on July 13th, 1957 and started a family, raising 3 boys. In 1979, the family moved to West Branch, Michigan and Duke became a licensed electrician. As a union electrician, Duke and family moved all over the United States, from Saginaw, to Kansas, Las Vegas, and Madison Heights. On March 12, 1988, Duke retired from being an electrician and they made their final big move to Hessel, Michigan, arriving in the middle of a snowstorm. Duke and Nancy bought the Hessel Bay Inn in 1988 and operated it until 1997, when they retired.
Duke served 8 years in the Navy Reserve. He was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, as well as being active in the Knights of Columbus and on the Hessel Marina Board.
Lawrence enjoyed playing poker, boating, and was an avid University of Michigan fan. He loved traveling in his R.V., and taking trips to Las Vegas, Mississippi, Florida, Maine, and Alaska.
Lawrence is survived by his sons, David Allan Masse of Cedarville, Michigan, and Bradley Lawrence (Cynthia) Masse of Spring Lake, Michigan; daughter Laura Lynn (Dan) Pringle-Masse of South Haven, Michigan; grandchildren Eric (Sarah Parker-Masse) Masse, Steven Masse, Jennifer Revard, Joseph Revard IV, Kelli Revard, Robert (Sarah) Mezzano, Makenzi Masse, Tyler Modzeleski, Trevor Modzelski, Gunner Masse, Chad Friedel, and Jama (Ryan) Wallace; great grandchildren Parker, Morgan, Saige, Kobe, Jasmin, Kauis, Zaela, Faith, and Robert; sisters Carolyn (Tony) Hagoert of Arizona, and Blanche Kromptez of Gladwin, Michigan; sisters in law Carol Clore of Battle Creek, Michigan; and brothers in law Peter (Debbie) Clore of Jackson, Michigan, and Michael (Erin) Clore of Battle Creek, Michigan.
Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents, Hamel and Agnes Masse; his wife, Nancy; and his sister-in-law Roseanne Sedlarik.
