Patricia Ann Stelmaszek, 84 of Rudyard, passed away Monday morning, February 10 at her son’s home in St. Ignace. She was born April 8, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan to Leslie and Emily (Jarvis) Twohey. After graduating High School, Pat worked in the accounting department of AAA of Michigan for several years. In July of 1957 she met the love of her life, Leo Stelmaszek. They were engaged in December of that year and were married on June 8, 1958. In 1969 Leo and Pat left the city life of the Detroit area to live in the small town of Fife Lake in the Northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. While living in Fife Lake, Pat was very active in the community, including working with Girl Scouts, and spent three years as the Township Treasurer. In 1975 the Pat and her family moved to the Upper Peninsula, first living in Skandia, near Marquette and then moving to Kinross Township, where they have lived for the past 42 years.
Patricia devoted her life to making her house a loving home for her family. She loved painting, wallpapering, refinishing furniture, and canning food for her family. Pat especially loved the gardens she cultivated at her home in Kinross Township. Each year she would shop to find new additions for her ‘garden in the woods’. Pat used to say she ‘traveled the world’ because of her children and grandchildren, exploring Germany, the Washington DC area, and the many sights along the way during her trips to and from Texas. Pat was also an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rudyard, where she sang in the Choir and served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years.
But what Patricia loved above all else was her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Leo, and is survived by her daughter and her husband, Kathleen and Josef Keim of Allen Texas, her son and his wife, Michael and Sarah Stelmaszek of St. Ignace, her seven ‘diamonds’, her grandchildren Andrew, Nicholas, Thomas, Caroline, Elaine, Kassandra, and Leo, and four great-grandchildren.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, February 14 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rudyard at 2:00 p.m. with Fr. Tim Hruska and Fr. Frank Ricca officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 1:00-2:00 p.m. preceding the funeral, with a Rosary being offered at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be at the North Rudyard Catholic Cemetery at a future date.
