Acquiring Wisdom
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” – Proverbs 2:6 (NIV)
A good friend of mine recently asked me about wisdom. I loved that she came to me with this because it gave me pause. How do we acquire wisdom? I know many people who think it comes with age. And yes, sometimes it does, and yet I know young people with wisdom too. I think wisdom can come to us through life experience. I have made many mistakes in my life, but I have always tried to learn from them. I believe if you learn from your mistakes then that’s an act of wisdom, especially if you don’t make the same mistake twice. In our quietness, we can find wisdom. I have found that when I am having difficulty with something, I go off in solitude and pray. It doesn’t mean I hide out at home, but often I go to a park or a quiet beach, somewhere in nature, where I can think and be alone with my thoughts. Ultimately though, wisdom comes from God, and we acquire it by reading and studying His Word. Everything we need to know is in the Holy Bible. James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.” – (NKJV) When I think of wisdom I think of having understanding, insight, and common sense. That is what the Holy Spirit gives us. When we have the Holy Spirit It gives us the wisdom to make good choices in our life. Don’t seek wisdom from earthly things. That is not spiritual wisdom. Always remember that true wisdom comes from God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, as we seek to be wise men and women, help us to understand that Your Word is our guidebook to finding it. Show us that as our knowledge grows with Your guidance that we may come to understand that true wisdom comes from You. In Your precious name, Amen.
