SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Will Riedell has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Defenseman of the Week, as announced by conference officials on Monday, Feb. 8.
The Lakers posted a split against the Northern Michigan Wildcats this weekend, with the Lake Superior State winning the first game of the series by a final score of 5-4 in overtime and fell in the series closer in overtime by a 4-3 final.
Defenseman of the Week: Will Riedell
Lake Superior State senior defenseman Will Riedell led the Lakers in the team’s split against the Northern Michigan Wildcats in a home conference series this weekend. In Saturday’s 5-4 overtime win, Riedell recorded a pair of assists in the game as he registered the secondary assist on the game tying goal and the lone helper on the game winning goal. The senior would add a goal and assist in the Lakers 4-3 overtime loss to the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Sunday. Riedell scored a goal with 1:01 remaining in regulation to bring the Lakers within a goal and notched the primary assist on the game tying goal with 12 seconds left in the game. The Greensboro, N.C. native was tied for first among WCHA defensemen in points this week with four and ranked second among conference defenders in assists with three. In the series against NMU, Riedell was a +2 rating and recorded eight shots on goal.
This is the second WCHA honor of the season for Riedell, who was named Defenseman of the Month by the conference for his play during the month of November.
This weekend, the Lakers will go back on the road to match up against the Bowling Green Falcons in a pair of WCHA games. The opening game of the series is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:07 p.m. and the series will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7:07 p.m. Both games will be played at the Slater Family Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio.
