Winter sports playoffs begin this week

The Sault High Blue Devil hockey team ended their regular season with a 5-5 record, falling on Senior Night at Big Bear Arena, 6-2 on Friday, and winning at Petoskey on Saturday 7-2. The Blue Devils will start their regional on Tuesday night in an opening round game against Tawas at 7:00 p.m. If the Blue Devils win, they will take on Alpena on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Tawas. You can hear that game on 1230 WSOO with Dave Watson, starting with the pregame show at 4:45. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the other regional semifinal on Thursday between Cheboygan and Gaylord. That game is scheduled for Saturday in Tawas.

High school basketball over the weekend, the Sault High Boys fell to Cheboygan on Friday, 50-45, and defeated Manistique on the road on Saturday afternoon, 65-59. Sault High (4-9) is home to Newberry on Tuesday. You can hear that game on 1230 WSOO starting with the tip-off show on Tuesday at 7 p.m. with Dave Watson and Ray Bell.

In other boys’ basketball from the weekend in Straits Area Conference play, Newberry topped St. Ignace on the road on Saturday, 62-59. Newberry (6-7) is at the Sault on Tuesday. St. Ignace (7-4) is at Rudyard on Monday. The Rudyard Bulldogs lost for just the second time this season on Friday, falling at Munising 59-49. Rudyard (10-2) will host St. Ignace on Monday.

In EUP boys’ basketball from Friday, Cedarville knocked off Pickford for the second time this season, winning at home, 46-35. Cedarville (6-4) is at DeTour on Monday. Pickford (2-9) is home to Pellston on Monday. The Brimley Bays picked up their 4th win of the year on Friday, winning at Engadine, 55-38. Brimley (4-6) is home to DeTour on Tuesday. Engadine (2-8) is at Mackinaw City on Monday.

In girls’ basketball the Sault High Blue Devil girls basketball team traveled to DeWitt on Saturday and improved to 11-0, winning their 28th straight game going back to last season, as they earned a 42-38 victory. The Blue Devils are in Marquette on Monday. St. Ignace improved to 9-3 on the season on Saturday, topping Mackinaw City, 77-42. The Saints are at Rudyard on Monday night. The Rudyard Bulldogs improved to 8-3 on the season, winning at Cheboygan on Saturday, 48-41. The Bulldogs host St. Ignace tonight and have a EUP Conference game at Pickford on Tuesday. You can hear that game, on the EUP Game of the Week on Country 105, starting with the pregame show around 7:00 p.m. Cedarville stayed in contention for the EUP conference title last Thursday, knocking off Pickford, 51-49. Cedarville (7-2) is home to DeTour on Monday. Pickford (7-4) will host Rudyard on Tuesday. Brimley topped Engadine on Thursday, 57-51, and fell at Mackinaw City 79-36 on Friday. The Bays (2-7) host Pickford on Wednesday.

The district matchups in high school basketball are set, as the selections were made on Sunday. Looking at the girls’ basketball district matchups in Division 2, District 34, the Sault High Blue Devils will start play on Wednesday, March 24 as they take on Kalkaska in a district semifinal. That game will be played in Cheboygan and you can hear the game on 1230 WSOO with Dave Watson and Ray Bell, starting with the tip-off show at 5:15. The other side of the bracket sees Grayling face Cheboygan on Monday, March 22, with the winner to face Boyne City in the other district semifinal. The district final is set for Cheboygan on Friday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.

St. Ignace in Division 3, District 67, will open up district play on Wednesday, March 24, at they will be at Harbor Springs, in the district semifinal at 6:00 p.m. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the other district semifinal, between the winner of Monday’s opening round game between East Jordan and Charlevoix, taking on Johannesburg Lewiston on Wednesday. The district final is set for Friday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.

Pickford will host the Division 4, District 102, starting on Wednesday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m. as they face DeTour. You can hear that game on the EUP Game of the Week, starting with the pregame show at 6:45. The other district semifinal will be at Mackinac Island, as the Islanders host Cedarville. The district final is set for Friday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.

Brimley will host the Division 4, District 101, as they start action on Wednesday, March 24 at home to Rudyard at 7:00 p.m. The other district semifinal is in Newberry, as the Indians host Engadine at 7:00 p.m. The district final is set for Friday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.

The other district semifinal sees the winner of Tuesday’s Grayling vs Kalkaska game take on Kingsley. The district final is set for Saturday, March 27 in Boyne City at 7:00 p.m.

St. Ignace will host the Division 3, District 67, and will start play on Thursday, March 25 against Johannesburg Lewiston at 6:00 p.m. The other district semifinal will see the winner of Tuesday’s Harbor Springs vs. East Jordan game travel to Charlevoix. The District Final is set for Saturday, March 27, at 1:00 p.m.

DeTour will host the Division 4, District 102, and will be home to Mackinac Island on Tuesday, March 23, at 7:00 p.m. The winner of that game will be at Mackinaw City on Thursday, March 25, at 7:00 p.m. The other district semifinal has Pickford hosting Cedarville on Thursday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. You can hear that game on the EUP Game of the Week on Country 105. The District Final is set for Saturday, March 27th at 7:00 p.m.

Brimley will host the Division 4, District 101, and will take on Ojibway Charter on Tuesday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. The winner will advance to the district semifinal to face Rudyard on Thursday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. The other district semifinal is between Engadine and Newberry. The District Final will be on Saturday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m.
