At approximately 12:15 pm on 5-26-2021, a patrol sergeant was waived down by a subject near the W. Portage Bridge over the Cloverland Coop power canal. As the officer approached in his vehicle he saw a subject jump from the bridge into the canal. The sergeant immediately radioed to the rest of the unit what occurred.
Officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department as well as numerous County, State, and Federal emergency responders deployed on every canal bridge and bank of the power canal.
The subject was last seen by a Sault officer just east of the Fort Street Bridge. The subject rose to the surface then immediately re-submerged. The subject was not seen again afterwards.
The Sault Police Department coordinated with Cloverland Electric over the company’s procedure in this type of incident. Cloverland will notify the PD if they locate the individual.
At this time the identity of the individual is not positively known.
