On June 23, 2021 at about 7:29pm, Central Dispatch advised of a structure fire on County Road 438. Deputy Wyma from the Luce County Sheriff Department was the first on scene and observed flames visible from the back side of the house. The homeowner advised the Deputy that they observed their house on fire when they returned home from a trip. The homeowner was also missing his Chevy Monte Carlo from the driveway. Columbus Fire Department was the first fire department on scene and they called for mutual aid from Newberry Fire Department. The State Police Fire Marshall also assisted in the investigation.
The homeowner advised the Deputy that he did have a suspect in mind. During a subsequent investigation, suspect Carl Phillip Verrett was apprehended a short time later in Mackinaw County along with the Monte Carlo.
Verrett was arraigned in the 92nd District Court on charges of Arson and Unlawfully Driving Away An Automobile.
