Lakers Fall 6-1 in Series Opener Against No. 3 Michigan

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.- The Lake Superior State hockey team fell to the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines in the non-conference series opener with a final score of 6-1 at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Lakers fell behind 3-0 in the first period of play with Michigan scoring two goals on the power play. The Wolverines scoring was led by Brendan Brisson (PP) who tallied first, followed by Mackie Samoskevich (EV), and Kent Johnson (PP).

In the second period, the Lakers started on the power play but couldn’t generate a goal past Michigan goalie Portillo. The Wolverines added two more goals from Garrett Van Wyhe and Dylan Duke in the second period, making it a 5-0 game after 40 minutes of play. Freshman Josh Nixon had a bit of a breakaway for a good opportunity, but couldn’t find a way past Portillo, keeping it a 5-0 game through the end of the second period.

The Lakers snapped the shutout at 1:30 of the third period when captain Louis Boudon was able to break through the zone to get the Lakers on the board at 18:30 of the third period with an assist from Harrison Roy and Jacob Bengtsson..

Goaltender Seth Eisele made 41 saves on 47 shots faced. Michigan’s Portillo faced 25 shots.

Special teams units from both sides saw plenty of ice time with 13 penalties called over the three periods.

The Lakers will return to action tomorrow night (10/9) against the Wolverines. The game will take place at the Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, MI at 7:00PM.
