Two years ago there was a report in the Paradise, MI area of a kidnapping where two adults kidnapped a small child and fled. The problem was that they fled on to the ice of Lake Superior where the weather conditions were deteriorating rapidly and the ice was in terrible condition.
Nearly the entire Chippewa County Sheriff Department, both on duty and off, responded to the area to assist in the search. Three officers tracked the kidnappers onto the ice and when they found them the kidnappers and the child were wet, cold ang huddled together to try and stay warm as they were unable to go any further.
On Saturday, December 4, these three officers were honored for their heroic, lifesaving actions in a special ceremony by the Chippewa County Sheriff.
Sheriff’s Detective Doug Mitchell, Conservation Officer Cpl Kevin Postma, and Conservation Officer Sgt Calvin Smith all received Michigan Sheriff Association Life Saving Awards and Pins.
“There is no doubt without the actions of these Officers all three would not have make it,” said Sheriff Mike Bitnar. “I have never been so proud of our Deputy Sheriffs and all of those that assisted, as I was on that day.”
