Betty Lou Bailey

Betty Lou (McClure) Bailey, age 91, of Drummond Island, Michigan, died on February 9, 2022, in St. Ignace, Michigan. She was born on March 15, 1931, in Charleston, West Virginia.

Betty was a foundling. In 1931, she was warmly wrapped in a baby blanket and found in the Lobby of the Kanawha Hotel in Charleston, WV. She was adopted by John Quentin “Qwee” and Mary Katherine (Roseberry) McClure. Her childhood and High School years were spent in neighboring South Charlestown, WV. After graduating high school, Betty began work with PPG Industries. With the help of a night-school degree in Business Accounting, she eventually worked her way to the PPG Headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she met Frank “Gerry” Bailey of Drummond Island, Michigan, and they married on November 26, 1971, in Winchester, Virginia. She retired from PPG after 51 years and they moved to Drummond Island. They’ve been married over 50 years, of which the last 22 years were on the Island.

Betty was a member of the Drummond Island Historical Museum board. Also, she was Drummond Island Tourism Association interface for twelve years She thoroughly enjoyed promoting Drummond Island and talking to the public.

Betty enjoyed outdoor sports, water skiing, snow skiing, tennis, and golf. But flower gardening has been her love throughout her life.

Betty is survived by her husband, Gerry Bailey; son, Scott (Cindy) Bailey; daughter, Sharolyn (David) Steele; brothers-in-law, Byron (Janet) Bailey and Kevin (Karen) Ledy; grandson, Zachary Huston Steele; and her cat, Katie Komulaine Bailey.

Betty was preceded in death by her adoptive parents; and father and mother in-law, Buster and Edna Bailey and Lawrence and Lillian Ledy.

A private family gathering has been held and a Celebration of Life will be held in the Summer 2022.
