On February 26th, 2022 at approximately 2:45 p.m. troopers from the Michigan State Police, Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to a report of a crash between a snowmobile and a Toyota Mini Van. The crash occurred on M-28 and County Road 401 in Pentland Township, Luce County. Troopers arrived and found the snowmobile and Toyota Mini Van were heavily damaged. The driver of the snowmobile attempted to cross M-28 however failed to yield for a vehicle traveling eastbound. The 63-year-old female driver of the Mini Van was treated by Luce EMS and was released on scene. The 15-year-old male driver of the snowmobile was treated at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital for severe head injuries and numerous other injuries. The driver was air lifted to Marquette UP Health Systems for emergency surgery prior to being air lifted to U of M Hospital for further surgeries. The driver remains in critical condition. The crash remains under investigation.
The driver of the Toyota Mini Van was a 63-year-old female from Newberry, Michigan.
The driver of the snowmobile was a 15-year-old male from Harrison Township. Michigan. He was traveling with his family at the time of the crash.
Troopers were assisted on scene by the Luce County Sheriff’s Department snowmobile patrol, DNR, and Luce County Fire/EMS.
