Snowmobilers help save life of other driver in group after serious accident in Chippewa County

On 2-24-2022 at approximately 3:43 pm the Chippewa Co Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a snowmobile crash on Trail #8 near Flatfoot Rd, Superior Twp, Chippewa County.

It was found that a group of 11 snowmobiles were traveling on Trail #8 when the lead sled ran out of gas. The snowmobile stopped in the middle of the trail. The driver of snowmobile #1 was a 30 yr old male from Indiana.

Snowmobile #2 in the group was unable to stop and attempted to go around snowmobile #1. The #2 sled hit the side of #1 and the driver of snowmobile #1 was thrown off the sled and into the trail.
Snowmobile #3 was then unable to stop and ran over the driver from snowmobile #1.

This resulted in devastating injuries to driver #1.

The immediate response from those in the group, including using a belt, as a tourniquet, to help stop the bleeding is believed to have saved the driver.

Alcohol was NOT a factor in this crash. Speed and riding too close together were factors.

REMINDER TO ALL THOSE RIDING SNOWMOBILES:
It is your responsibility to drive at a rate of speed that you can stop in time without running into the sleds in front of you.

Often times there is a (Snow Dust) cloud that follows each snowmobile as they drive down the trail.
Please don’t drive close enough you are in that cloud as you can’t see.

We have had multiple reports from Groomer operators reporting close calls with snowmobiles almost running head on into their groomers.

PLEASE SLOW DOWN!
Bay Mills Emergency Connection (EMS), Superior fire, DNR and Central dispatch all assisted.
Thank you and BE SAFE!
