SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Three student-athletes on the Lake Superior State men’s basketball team have received all-conference honors for their play during the 2021-22 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) season. Redshirt senior guard Malek Adams was named First Team All-GLIAC, senior forward Kemon Bassett was named Second Team All-GLIAC, and senior guard C.J. Robinson was named to the All-GLIAC Defensive Team, as announced by conference officials on Friday, March 4.
Malek Adams, First Team All-GLIAC
Adams, a redshirt senior guard, led the Lakers and ranked second among all GLIAC players with 19.8 points per game as he started all 27 games for the team this season. Adams scored double-digits in all but one game during the 2021-22 season and posted 13 games with 20 or more points. The best game of Adams’ career came in his final collegiate contest as he totaled 42 points in the team’s 99-94 overtime loss to Northern Michigan on March 2. This season, Adams led the Lakers in points (535), field goals (177), three-pointers (65), and free throws (116). In addition, the senior guard also ranked first among his teammates in steals (43), and was second on the team in both rebounds (116) and assists (98).
The Grand Ledge, Mich. native finished the season with a 44.6 field goal percentage and a 34.0 mark from three. Adams finished his collegiate career with 1,622 points to rank ninth all-time in program history. It marks the third time in Adams’ career that he received all-conference honors as he was named First Team All-GLIAC in 2018-19 and Second Team All-GLIAC in 2020-21.
Kemon Bassett, Second Team All-GLIAC
Bassett, a senior forward, ranked second on the team and 10th in the GLIAC with 14.5 points per game as he played in 19 games for the Lakers this season. Bassett recorded 14 games with 10 or more points, including a season-high 25 points in the team’s 88-73 win over Ferris State on Feb. 10 in the Bud Cooper. At the close of the season, Bassett ranked first on the Lakers in blocks (19) and rebounds per game (5.2), second on the Lakers in points (275), field goals (97) and offensive rebounds (30), and third on the Lakers in assists (68). Bassett finished the season with 99 total rebounds to rank fourth among his teammates and also ranked fourth in steals with 22.
The Detroit, Mich. native finished his second season with the Lakers ranking in the top-10 in the conference in both assists per game (3.6) and blocks per game (1.0). Bassett recorded a double-double in the team’s 71-63 win at Purdue Northwest on Feb. 17 as he totaled 18 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. It marks the second consecutive season that Bassett has received all-conference recognition as he was named First Team All-Conference in 2020-21.
C.J. Robinson, All-GLIAC Defensive Team
Robinson, a senior guard, started all 26 games he played in for the Lakers this season and led his teammates in minutes per game (33.2) as he was heavily relied on by coach Hettinga to shut down the Lakers opponent. Robinson’s 33.2 minutes on the floor per game ranked third among all GLIAC players this season. The senior guard finished the season ranking third on the Lakers in points (218), third in three pointers (37), and fourth in field goals (78). In addition, Robinson ranked fifth on the Lakers in rebounds (87), third in defensive rebounds (78), fourth in assists (61), and third in steals (28). Robinson finished the season averaging 8.4 points per game and recorded a career-high 19 points in the team’s 97-86 win over Davenport on Feb. 5.
Robinson’s assist-to-turnover ratio this season (3.6) led the Lakers and was tied for third-best in the conference. The Clarkston, Mich. native tallied 61 assists and just 17 turnovers this season. It marks the second consecutive season that Robinson was named to the All-GLIAC Defensive Team.
