SAULT STE MARIE, MI — Famous Soo Locks Cruises, Inc. operating as Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours announces the succession of Scott LaBonte to General Manager in training for its 63rd season starting in May. LaBonte, formerly Fire Chief of Sault Ste. Marie, will combine his safety, management and community outreach skills with a lifelong passion for boating for his new role. After forty-one seasons managing Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours, current General Manager, Richard Brawley, will retire after this season.
“Growing up, I would cross Lake Superior heading to Isle Royale with my grandfather and I’ve been a boating enthusiast ever since. When I was contacted about this role, it felt like an ideal fit,” said LaBonte. “I am humbled to have been chosen for this position and excited to provide the Famous tour experience our guests have loved for decades and expand into new tour opportunities.”
LaBonte is in the process of completing his 100 ton Masters license to be able to captain tours aboard the iconic yellow and blue tour boats. Assistant Manager, Libby Lajoie, will continue to oversee the hiring process, group tour bookings and office management while LaBonte will focus on tour operations, crew training and safety, budgeting and marketing.
“It’s been a wonderful career that I have thoroughly enjoyed – part of why I’ve continued working to age 75,” said Brawley. “I have great faith in Scott’s ability to take Famous into its next generation to continue serving the Eastern Upper Peninsula community and visitors to Sault Ste. Marie.”
The 63rd season for Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours will run May 14 to October 16, 2022 with three to six tours daily. In addition to the classic lock tour, Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours offers special lighthouse cruises on select Saturdays and fireworks cruises on July 1 and 4. Discounted tickets for all scheduled tours can be purchased online at famoussoolocks.com.
