Leroy Kenneth Marshall, age 78, of Trout Lake, Michigan, died unexpectedly on July 25, 2022, at home. He was born in Moran, Michigan, on October 9, 1943, to William and Henrietta (Bohn) Marshall.
Leroy grew up in Moran with all of his siblings. He was part of the U.S. Marine Corp for four years and fought in the Vietnam War. He was aboard the USS Arthur M. Anderson—the last ship in communications with the Edmund Fitzgerald as it went down on November 10, 1975. After four years in the military, he returned to Michigan and started working as a carriage driver on Mackinac Island, Michigan, where he met Martha Swartz, and they later married on February 9th, 1974.
He also worked on oil ships for two years in the Great Lakes. After the two married they moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he worked for the Department of Education at Ottawa High School as a custodian until he moved up in the world and went to work for the State of Michigan at the Ionia Reformatory for twenty-six years. He retired in 2001 and returned to Trout Lake in 2005, where he’s lived since.
Leroy was a member of the VFW, Commander of the American Legion #80, and a member of the Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids.
Leroy loved the outdoors and spent most of his time fishing, hunting, camping, exploring, and enjoying nature on his back porch. He had a huge heart for all and would help others at the drop of a hat. He would do anything for anyone and loved animals so much, especially his dog, “Peanut.”
Leroy is survived by his daughter, Holly (Jason) Moore of Grand Rapids; his son, Edward Marshall of Grand Rapids; granddaughter, Samara Steigmeyer; brother, John (Rita) Marshall of Marquette, Michigan; sisters, Lois Marshall of Marquette, and Judy Marshall of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
