Several large projects were closed out this year including the Downtown Access & Placemaking Project, Three Mile Road, and W. Portage Avenue. The Engineering Department would like to thank the residents and business owners for their cooperation during planning and construction.
Other smaller projects include the Ashmun Bridge Sign replacement which should be installed by mid-November. The Master Recreation Plan update which is currently in the 30-day public hearing period. We are also working with our Water and Waste Water Treatment plans, Donohue, and EGLE to forecast necessary upgrades and funding options. Lastly, if you have driven by the Carbide Dock you will see that Kokosing Alberici Taylor (KAT) is making fast progress on the slip reconstruction. KAT will be using this area for staging during the Soo Locks Project, under their lease with the city for the next seven years.
The Easterday Ave. Truck Route Reconstruction and Carbide Dock Port Reconstruction projects both had bids due in October and are currently under review. More information about these bids will be available at the November City Commission meetings as well as bid results posted on our website at: https://www.saultcity.com/rfps.
Future projects for 2023 include:
Power Canal Trail Phase II – Non motorized trail continuation – Ashmun to Johnston Street in partnership with MDOT, Cloverland, & Private Donations. (.45 miles)
This project, originally slated for 2022, was delayed due to emergency utility work on the canal required by Cloverland. MDOT awarded the contract to Payne & Dolan, and they have agreed to an extension of time until August 2023. We will continue to update the public on the project as cannot proceed with the project until Cloverland’s work is completed as they are working directly in the path of the trail. Total cost for 2022 before delay; $289,000.
Meridian Street – W. Easterday Ave to 8th Ave (.49 miles)
