SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lucas Signoretti scored once and was credited with setting-up three others to help lead the Espanola Paper Kings over the Soo Eagles 4-2 Friday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at Pullar Stadium.
Sault Ste. Marie did strike first as they clicked 40 seconds in when Kenny Belanger slammed in the rebound off a Chase Tallaire shot.
Coming right back though, Espanola tied it on a play that Eagles’ goalkeeper Logan Raffaele could not gather in off a draw, which allowed Graydon Guthrie to stuff in the loose puck.
Moving to the middle stanza, Signoretti put the Paper Kings in front at 2:49 as he came into the Soo zone in transition and was allowed to skate into the high slot where he snapped a shot past the glove of Raffaele.
Hunter Frieesen then made it 3-1 Espanola with a power play goal at 15:48 that saw him complete an impressive three-way passing play with Kyle den Ouden and Signoretti.
Countering quickly though, the Eagles pulled back to within one 39 seconds later on a play that saw Bryce Granboise jam in his fifth of the campaign as he got it past Paper Kings’ goalkeeper Jake Marois.
Staying the 3-2 for the visitors until late in the third period, the guests iced the road victory with an empty net marker from Spencer Horgan as his long-range attempt from deep in his own territory slid the length of the ice and into the open cage to round out the scoring.
The outcome saw the winners go to 12-9-2-2 on the year while the Soo dropped to 12-10-2-0 overall.
