DETROIT, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University men’s and women’s cross country programs competed at the GLIAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Wayne State at Willow Metropark on Friday, earning respective placements of 9th and 10th.
Men
Junior Ethan Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) paced the men’s team after completing the 8k race with a personal best time of 27:58.23, a 23 second improvement. Ryan O’Neill (Perry, Mich.) and Reese Camp (Highland, Mich.) were not far behind, each crossing the finish line within the following 30 seconds with O’Neill’s time of 28:14.10 also being a new personal best. Aaran Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) would then complete the race with a time of 28:53.52 followed by Skylar Wiliams (Battle Creek, Mich.) who reached the end of the course at the 29:35.40 mark. Riley Sponseller rounded out the lineup with a time of 34:13.71.
Women
Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) led the young core of runners for the women’s team with a time of 26:24.00 in Detroit. Gwen Phillips (Cadillac, Mich.) and Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) then completed the course within ten seconds of each other with Phillips edging out her teammate with a time of 28:17.43. Olivia Stevens (Grand Haven, Mich.) would then cross the finish line at the 29:30.60 mark before being followed by Sofia Salazar (Valle del Cauca, Columbia) who finished the course with a personal best time of 30:22.47 in the second race of her career. Katelyn Moore (Grayling, Mich.) and Kate Baker (Northville, Mich.) rounded out the day for the women’s team with Moore completing the race with a final time of 31:02.79 while Baker finished six seconds later.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19 when they return to the historic Wisconsin-Parkside cross country course in Kenosha, Wis. for the NCAA Midwest Regional Meet.
