Martha Ann Behnke, age 89, passed away early Thursday morning, December 8, 2022 at From the Heart Assisted Living. The daughter of the late Edward and Eleanor (Kurkowski) Williams, she was born on July 21, 1933 in Royal Oak. Martha did work as a pharmacist assistant for Sherman Drugs and Providence Hospital before taking a position as a correction officer, working for several years at Ionia State Prison and then Camp Koehler in Kinross. She enjoyed quilting and reading and spending time outdoors, especially fishing. Martha had a true love of dogs, and she was always caring for rescue dogs and former sledding dogs.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Behnke. She is survived by her son, Thomas (Veronica) Williams of Royal Oak; two grandchildren, Matthew Williams and Theresa Williams; and her special friend, Deborah (Glenn) Smale of Big Bay and their children, Jeff Pine and Jessica Lagalo; and her nine adopted grandchildren.
It was Martha’s desire for cremation to take place. A springtime celebration of her life will be held in 2023 and burial will be at Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville. Funeral home arrangements are being provided by the Trahan Funeral Chapel. For on-line sentiments: www.trahanfc.com
