GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University men’s basketball team (13-13, 12-6 GLIAC) battled for a 82-80 victory on the road against the Davenport Panthers (7-21, 3-15 GLIAC) on Saturday.
Both teams battled early, but the Panthers were able to push out ahead to go up by eight. The Lakers responded with an 11-0 run of their own later in the opening half that featured a three from Tyson Edmondson to give his team their first lead of the day. Edmondson would then hit another three as the Lakers pressed ahead on their way to a 45-36 lead at the half.
Both teams went back and forth early in the second half, but the Panthers were able to crawl their way back to within two points. The Lakers went back up by five after a timeout, but Davenport would tie the game at 58-58 before taking the lead with less than ten minutes remaining in the contest. The Panthers were able to go up by as many as seven points, but the Lakers were able to grind their way to the free throw line as Caden Ebeling and Kemon Bassett had their team back within one. Both teams continued to battle, but Ebeling was able to tie the game back up at 75-75 before a Bassett and-one retook the lead. Bassett and David Wren would then ice the game away at the free throw line for the 82-80 victory to end the regular season.
Ebeling led the way offensively with 25 points, but Bassett was not far behind with 23 points and ten rebounds for his second-consecutive double-double while also leading all players with four assists.
The Lakers will now turn their attention to the postseason when they host the No. 5 seeded Grand Valley State Lakers on Wednesday, March 1 for the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament.
