SAULT STE MARIE, MI — 15 Mile Rd had been closed for just over a day due to an overflowing creek that took out the road.
The Chippewa County Road Commission reported on Facebook that the cause of the incident was due to a frozen culvert and quickly melting snow.
The creek is a small tributary three-quarters of a mile east of Riverside Drive. With the sudden increase in temperatures, the snow melted quickly causing the creek to flow much faster. The frozen culvert stopped the flow and, eventually, the water flowed around the culvert washing out the soil underneath the road causing it to collapse.
The good news, however, is that with the new open flow of water, the creek subsided rather quickly and the Road Commission was able to repair the road in just over a day’s time.
Thank you to the Road Commission for monitoring the situation and repairing the road as soon as possible.
