March 31, 2023 EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Lake Superior State University track and field program competed at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational on Friday. The Lakers battled inclement weather on their way to a solid outing to open up the outdoor season, highlighted by Jenna Fleming‘s (Hilton Beach, Ont.) 11th career first place performance in the javelin throw with a distance of 42.34 meters, besting six NCAA Division I throwers. The men would conclude the day with six top-ten finishes on the day, highlighted by a fifth place finish in the discus event by Ryan Reiniche (Hillsdale, Mich.) who threw for a distance of 44.47 meters. Riley Traver (Hartford, Mich.) continued the strong day with a seventh place showing in the high jump, leaping a height of 1.79 meters, and true freshman Trey Nieman (Morenci, Mich.) was able to secure a personal best distance of 37.31 meters in the hammer throw. On the track, Michael Sherman (Boyne City, Mich.) came away with a tenth place finish in the 400-meter race with a personal best time of 51.16. Meanwhile, Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.) would earn a sixth place finish in the 1500-meter run with a personal best of his own, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:14.60. Avery Timm (Petosky, Mich.) would also come away with multiple new personal records with times of 16.87 and 1:04.79 in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. The men would also come away with a pair of top ten relay squads in both the 4×100 and the 4×400 with Blake Dunning (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Andrew Giddens (Cadillac, Mich.) competing in both events. Fleming’s first place performance in the javelin throw highlighted the day for the Lakers, but the ladies would come away with five other top-ten finishes. Jayda Williams (Claxton Bay, Trinidad) earned a tenth place finish in the 100-meter race with a time of 12.89 seconds, and she would also place ninth in the long jump, clearing a distance of 5.31 meters. Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.) was able to assert herself in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:36.37 on her way to a fifth place finish. Meanwhile, the Lakers would earn a pair of top five finishes in the 4×100-meter relay, including a fourth place finish from the tandem of Lindsey Tonello (Cadillac, Mich.), Breanyl Baker (St. Catherine, Jamaica), Sofia Salazar (Valles del Cauca, Colombia), and Williams combining for a time of 50.39.
