The Sault High Boys and Girls track teams traveled to Alpena on Tuesday for a Tri meet with Alpena and Traverse City Central. The girls easily won the meet with a team score of 66, with Traverse City Central coming in second with 34 points, and Alpena finishing with 32 points. Sophomore Bella Smith won the 100m (13.49) and came in third place in the 200m race (28.76). Junior Tarynn Pratt finished fifth in both sprint races (14.11 and 29.48), and came in second in the 400m run (1:07.09). Senior Kenzie Bell and sophomore Maddie McLean also placed in the top eight in the 200, with Bell taking second (28.76) and McLean taking eighth (30.95). The Lady Blue Devils had three other strong runners in the 400, with junior Isabella DeWildt finishing third (1:08.21), junior Dayna Szabo finishing fifth (1:09.70), and sophomore Ava Mayer placing sixth (1:10.94). Junior Calla Armstrong took third in the 800m run (3:01.97) while freshman Taylor Meilstrup came in eighth (3:40.34). Senior Cassandra Gallagher took second in the 1600m run (6:19.70) and Armstrong and Meilstrup came in third (6:47.36) and eighth (7:49.01) places. Gallagher took first in the 3200m (13:27.84) as well. In the 100m hurdles, sophomore Annabelle Fazzari won the race (17.64), while teammates senior Claire Erickson came in third (18.78), sophomore Jillian Newhouse came in fourth (20.29), and senior Brianna Jones came in fifth (21.07). In the 300m hurdles, Erickson came in second (52.59) and Newhouse came in fifth (1:00.63). The Sault girls dominated the relays, with Bell, Fazzari, DeWildt, and Smith taking second in the 4×100 with a time of 55:15. Bell, Pratt, Erickson, and Smith won the 4×200 with a time of 1:56.45. Bell, Szabo, DeWildt and Erickson won the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:41.03. Gallagher, Szabo, DeWildt, and Junior Abigail Walther won the 4×800 relay with a time of 11:24.65. The Lady Blue Devils had a successful afternoon in the field events as well. In shot put, Fazzari took first, throwing 32’4.75. Teammates senior Katie Anderson and junior Iris Butler came in third (28’8.75) and fifth (28’6.75). Anderson won the discus, (90’1) and Butler came in eighth (66’10). In the high jump, freshman Gracie Akridge took second(4’3) while McLean won the long jump (14’6) and teammates Newhouse took sixth (13’0) and sophomore Jolene Elkins took eighth (11’10.25).
The boys finished up the meet right behind Traverse City, with 34 points. Alpena won the boys competition with 61 points, while Traverse City had 41. Boys Head Coach Jim Martin was proud of the effort the boys put in, noting “We haven’t gotten that close in points to Traverse City in a meet in several years.” Senior Carter Oshelski won the 100m (11.31) and senior Alex Jacek came in sixth (11.78). In the 400m run, senior River Perez took sixth (1:01.35), senior Truman Maher took seventh (1:03.78), and senior Billy Menard came in eighth (1:04.76). Freshman Gabe Litzner won the 800m (2:13.45) with senior Logan Haskins close behind, taking second place (2:14.43). Litzner also won the 1600m run (4:43.35). The Sault had several successful runners in the 3200m run. Senior Cody Aldridge won (10:14.56), freshman Shea Armstrong came in fourth (12:40.93), sophomore Evan Huyck came in fifth (12:47.11), freshman Daniel Bowerman came in seventh (12:51.59) and freshman Ryan O’Connor rounded out the top eight (12:58.03). Sophomore Owen Rice placed fifth in both the 110m hurdles (19.08) and 300m hurdles (46.87). Freshman Isaac Niebuhr was not too far behind him in both events, coming in eighth in the 110m (20.95) and seventh in the 300m (50.60). In the relays, the Blue Devils came in fourth in the 4×100 relay with Jacek, Menard, senior Sebastian Salcedo-Arroyo and Perez with a time of 47.99. Two relay teams competed in the 4×200. Jacek, Perez, Menard and Oshelski took third with a time of 1:39.67 and sophomore Donnivan Dykraaf, freshmen Caleb Klier and Charlie Williams, along with Salcedo-Arroyo placed sixth with a time of 1:54.81. In the 4×400 relay, Dykraaf, Klier, Haskins and Litzner placed fourth with a time of 4:03.04. The Sault came in second in the 4×800 relay with runners Aldridge, Haskins, Huyck and Armstrong with a time of 9:43.45. For the field events, Junior Evan Arbic did well placing fifth in shot put, throwing 35’0.5 and fourth in discus, throwing 95’10.5. Throwers junior Walter Anderson placed sixth (34’10.25) and sophomore Jesse Justice-Beck placed seventh (34’3.25”). In high jump, juniors Nathan Koepp placed third (5’3”) and Talon Thomas-Holm placed fifth (5’0”). Junior Rayce Rizzo swept the pole vault (11’6”) and long jump (19’8.5”).
The Sault will send a roster of athletes to the Harbor Springs Ram Scram on Friday.
