SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men’s and women’s cross country programs have been selected to finish ninth and tenth, respectfully, in the 2023 GLIAC preseason poll, as voted on by the coaches.
LSSU cross country is set to open the 2023 campaign at Michigan Tech on Sept. 2 before traveling south for the Northwood Invite on Sept. 9. Then, they will continue to train throughout the remainder of the month in preparation for the annual Red October meet at Saginaw Valley. The Lakers will then turn their attention to the postseason championship events, beginning with the GLIAC Championships on Oct. 21, followed by the NCAA Midwest Regional in Evansville, Ind.
The men’s team brings in five new freshmen to join an experienced group of upperclassmen, led by seniors Aaron Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.), Ethan Nachazel (East Jordan, Mich.), Ryan O’Neill (Perry, Mich.), and Roy Bowman (Jerome, Mich.).
On the women’s side, the Lakers return six experienced juniors in Kate Baker (Northville, Mich.), Sydney Kapushinski (Imlay City, Mich.), Katelynn Moore (Grayling, Mich.), Kara Mosher (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.), Gwen Phillips (Cadillac, Mich.), and Olivia Stevens (Grand Haven, Mich.). They will also return Julie Sheehy (Walkerville, Mich.) who will be looking to make her debut after redshirting during the previous season. Alongside the returners, LSSU brings in four additional freshmen to balance out the roster.
