Sault Cross Country Success in Manistique

The Varsity Boys and Middle School Girls Blue Devils cross country teams won their respective races at the Emeralds Invitational in Manistique earlier this week. The varsity boys led the field of six teams, sneaking past Gladstone with a score of 38, to Gladstone’s 40. Sophomore Gabe Litzner (17:46.69) was the overall winner, with sophomore teammate Shea Armstrong (19:24.22) a few places behind him, taking fourth. Coach Martin was pleased with the boys’ finish in the meet. “The boys kept the streak alive of winning an invitational EVERY year since 1998 with a surprise upset of Gladstone. Gabe ran another excellent race while Shea passed 20 runners the last mile.” There were a number of other runners with strong finishes for the team. “Also, (junior) Evan Huyck (20:21.37), (sophomore) Ryan O’Connor (20:28.06), and (freshman) Chase Aldridge (21:01.90) all passed 3-5 runners the last mile. What a great effort the last mile.” Close behind their teammates were juniors McKal Berry (21:51.98) and Isaac Brindley (22:08.43).

The varsity girls came in third place, with 64 points, following Gladstone and Stephenson with 38 and 46 points, respectively.  Sophomore Elise Proulx (24:58.73) was the top runner for the team, impressing her coach. “Elise Proulx continues to amaze as she chopped 5 minutes off last years time.” Teammates sophomore Stephanie Jones (25:55.29), freshman Leighton Nyboer (26:02.49), and freshman Regan Sporte (26:11.96) also made improvements. “Steph Jones dropped almost 2 minutes also. Regan and Leighton keep getting better every week.” Sophomores Eleanor Carey (27:18.39) and Taylor Meilstrup (27:49.69), and freshman Addyson Labadie (28:29.45) rounded out the roster for the team.

The JV boys came in fourth place with 60 points. “For the JV’s (freshmen) Easton Hills (22:28.71) and Hayden Preston (24:59.68) ran excellent races.” The JV girls team came in first place with 15 points. “For the JV’s (freshmen) Chloe Brow (31:12.38) and Gigi Sayer (32:06.31), and (sophomore) Evelyn Weber (32:34.06) ran really well.”
