The Sault High Blue Devils cross country team competed in the 4th Annual Northwood Invite at Northwood University in Midland. Sophomore Gabe Litzner (15:59.10) crossed the finish line first for the varsity boys competition, in a field of 187 runners. The boys team placed 12th out of 18 teams, and had a number of other runners do well. Coach Jim Martin praised the efforts of his harriers. “(Sophomore) Shea Armstrong (18:02.40) also had another nice race. (Sophomore) Ryan O’Connor (20:07.90) and (junior) Evan Huyck (19:50.40) ran very good races as did (junior) McKal Berry (20:50.90).” Freshman Chase Aldridge (20:35.10) and senior Devin Goetz (21:33.10) rounded out the roster for the varsity team. The JV boys placed 7th out of 9 teams. “(Junior) Eli Hills (20:15.90), and (sophomore) Dan Bowerman (22:00.40) had excellent first races as did (freshman) Arlin Alcorn (23:11.00).”
On the girls side, the varsity runners placed 14th out of 15 teams. “(Sophomore) Elise (Proulx, 23:16.60), (senior) Abby Walther (23:31.80), (freshman) Leighton Nyboer (23:39.30), and (senior) Dayna Szabo (24:38.60) all ran really well on a wet, mushy and slow course.” Freshman Regan Sporte (24:26.70), senior Calla Armstrong (24:38.60), and sophomore Eleanor Carey (26:35.60) completed the roster for the varsity girls team. “(Freshman) Gigi Sayer (30:20.80) had a great race running her lifetime best in the JV division.” The JV girls placed 5th out of 6 teams.
“We were about the smallest school there and one of only a few that weren’t ranked in the top 20 in the state. But we learned we need to work even harder if we are going to accomplish all our team goals.”
The Blue Devil harriers have to regroup quickly in order to run in the SAC Jamboree #1 in St Ignace on Monday.
