Blue Devils JV Football Shows Improvement

The Sault High Blue Devils put up a good fight during their last home game of the season against the Alpena Wildcats. The Blue Devils marched down the field early on in the first quarter. A nice pass from Wyatt Peabody to Nick Causley put them in good field position to score. A touchdown run by Marc DeWildt put the Blue Devils up on the board first. The two point attempt was no good. The Wildcats rallied, and scored shortly after. The score was 6-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Blue Devils had a number of solid plays in the second quarter, but could not keep up with the Wildcats quick offense. It was 31-6 at the half.

The Blue Devils only allowed one more Alpena touchdown in the second half, and started to close the gap in the beginning of the fourth quarter, when Sam Kiekhaefer scampered across the goal line. The two point conversion attempt was again no good. Kiekhaefer had one more touchdown run, and the handoff to Caleb Klier for the successful two point conversion made the final score Alpena 38, Sault Ste Marie 20.

Coach Hallai was proud of the team’s effort Thursday night. “That was definitely our best game this year despite the loss. Mistakes though with such a young team are costly. #5 for Alpena was probably the best athlete we’ve seen all year and I thought the coaches came up with a great defensive scheme and the boys executed well to slow him down but, stopping him was a tall task.”

“The biggest stand out on offense was our offensive line and Sam Kiekhaefer. They really took pride in blocking for him and Sam ran hard all game. We definitely feel the pieces are starting to fall together with these kids and look forward to seeing progress these last two weeks.”

The JV Blue Devils (1-6) head south next week to take on the Petoskey Northmen in another conference match up.
