The Sault High Varsity Football team improved to 5-2 overall, and 2-2 in the Big North Conference Friday night, beating Alpena 21-6 at Wildcat Stadium.
In the first quarter, Ryver Ryckeghem had a 3 yard touchdown run to put the Blue Devils up on the board. Danny Denuccio-McShane had a successful two point conversion run. It was 8-0 Sault, at the end of the quarter. Ryckeghem added to the score in the second quarter with 41 yard touchdown run. The extra point kick attempt was no good, making the score 14-0, Sault at the half. In the third quarter, Kaydin Lujan scored for the Blue Devils with an 18 yard touchdown run. Aaron McLeod’s extra point kick was good. 21-0 Sault. Alpena finally got on the board after a 6 yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Their extra point kick attempt was no good, making the final score Sault 21, and Alpena 6.
Offensively, the Blue Devils had a predominantly rushing game. Ryckeghem had 15 carries for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns, Lujan had 13 carries for 95 yards and 1 touchdown, Cam Labadie had 6 carries for 47 yards, and Cale Bell had 6 carries for 25 yards. On the passing side, Callen Campbell was 4 for 10 for 46 yards and 1 interception. Lujan had 1 catch for 16 yards, Bell had 2 catches for 15 yards, and Ezra Beach had 1 catch for 15 yards.
On defense, the Blue Devils remained strong, allowing just the one Wildcat touchdown. Lujan had 14 tackles and 1 pass defense, Carson Kronemeyer had 4 tackles and 1 QB sack, Ryan Ten Eyck had 5 tackles and 1 pass defense, Bell had 4 tackles,
Joey Gravelle had 1 tackle and 6 pass defenses, and Tristan Walcher had 1 QB sack.
Next week, the Sault (5-2 overall, 2-2 in the league) will host Petoskey (4-3 overall, 3-2 in the league) for what’s sure to be an exciting Big North Conference match up.
