SAC Finals Success

The Sault Area High School and Middle School cross country teams recently competed in the Straits Area Conference finals in Rudyard. The teams placed in the top two for each race, and had a number of runners make the Top 20 to achieve All Conference status.

The Varsity Boys came in first place, with a total of 28 points. Gabe Litzner (15:49) crossed the finish line first with Shea Armstrong (16:45) taking second. Eli Hills (18:18) and Evan Huyck (18:54) rounded out the top ten. Ryan O’Connor (18:57), Chase Aldridge (19:07), and McKal Berry (20.22) completed the championship team. All seven runners made the All Conference squad.

The Varsity Girls squad were runners up, with 51 points. They had three finishers in the top ten with Abby Walther (21:24) taking sixth, Elise Proulx (21:55) finishing ninth and Stephanie Jones (22:12) in tenth. Calla Armstrong (22:14), Regan Sporte (23:30), Leighton Nyboer (23:59) and Dayna Szabo (24:21) helped their team finish strong. Walther, Proulx, Jones, Armstrong, Sporte and Szabo earned enough points across the SAC races this season to make the All Conference team.

Coach Jim Martin reflected on the conference competition. “The boys performance was nothing short of terrific. The team is gelling at just the right time. The girls ran faster than they have all year and had their best score of the year but sometimes you just get beat by a better team. 10 of our 14 varsity runners ran their season or lifetime best times on a cold wet and muddy course.”

The JV Boys runners swept their event, taking the top three spots. Isaac Brindley (20:18), Devin Goetz (20:49), and Easton Hills (20:55) took first, second and third respectively. Arlin Alcorn (22:31), Aiden Burtt (23:46), Hayden Preston (24:15), Camren McClenny (26:47), and Johnny Osborn (33:27) all had a good race.

The JV girls also had the first three finishers, with Taylor Meilstrup (24:42), Eleanor Carey (24:44) and Noa Durand-Cabeza (27:34) coming in at the top. Gianna Sayer (28:12), Chloe Brow (28:25), Evelyn Weber (29:57), Hailee O’Connor (30:28), Savannah Proulx (30:58) and Thelma Osumili (36:44) all finished strong.

In the Middle School two mile races, the boys team came in second with 72 points. Ian Southwell (12:01), finished first with Drew Burtt (12:41) in fifth and Zachary Peterson in seventh (13:21). David Hollister (14:41), Collin Bunker (14:50), Parker Hills (15:32), Nolan Green (15:38), Jacob Proulx (16:32), Chancellor Gardner (16:34), Mace Kavanaugh (17:59), AJ Guilmette (18:12), and Chase Halvorsen (18:18) made big improvements throughout the season. Southwell, Burtt, Peterson and Hollister made the All Conference Team.

The Middle School girls team finished in first place with 39 points. Cora Goulet (12:52) was runner up, with Isabelle McCord (14:13) in fourth and Isabeau Woodard (15:14) in tenth. Khloey Suppa (15:22), Anna Klozatsky (15:22), Isabella Cicco (16:04), River Brey (17:39), Olivia Nyboer (17:46), Shelby Woolever (18:20), Annalise Kasprzak (19:19) and Kruze Taylor (19:58) rounded out the championship squad. Goulet, McCord, Woodard, Suppa, Klozatsky and Cicco made the All Conference Team.

The season is coming to a close, with the Middle School teams traveling to Regionals in St Ignace on Wednesday, and the Varsity teams will return to Gladstone to compete in the MHSAA UP Division 1 Finals on Saturday.
