It was Senior Night at AJ Van Citters field, and the Sault High Blue Devils took on the Oscoda Owls. Seniors Rayce Rizzo (#2), Logan Orr (#4), Gavin Aikens (#31), Gregorio Serra (#17) and Julian Hohl (#7) were recognized at the start of the game.
Noah Weber scored for the Blue Devils, thanks to a nice pass from Dean Roe, putting them on the scoreboard first. Team Captain Jordan Doghmi shared about the game. “We had a good first half that ended with us up by one goal, because of this we went into the second half with a lot of energy. After a battle in our own end during the second half an Oscoda player got a shot off that our goalie Nick Wood had no chance against.” That goal tied the game, 1-1. Oscoda scored again, after the Blue Devils goalie knocked the ball away, only to have the ball be redirected right back to an Oscoda player who just tapped it in.
With 3:00 to go, the coach swapped goalies to put Nick Wood into the striker role and he almost tied the game with 2:00 left but the Oscoda goalie made an awesome save.
Reece Gibson had a great game with multiple scoring opportunities that did not work out in the Blue Devils favor. The players are getting much better at passing plays and communicating on the field in order to move the ball more effectively.
“I think we did our best and our playing reflected that. I truly believe that we are a stronger team, despite our loss today. We made a lot of mistakes and had a lot of good plays that we couldn’t capitalize on but we played like a team and I’m proud of that.”
The Blue Devils competed in the UP Championship tournament in Marquette on Saturday and head to Districts in Gaylord on Thursday. Prior to this year, soccer teams from the UP were not included in the State competition.
Seniors: Gregorio Serra, Julian Hohl, Logan Orr, Gavin Aikens, and Rayce Rizzo.
