SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) volleyball team (7-20, 4-12 GLIAC) is set to wrap up the regular season when they host Upper Peninsula rivals Northern Michigan (NMU) (11-16, 8-8 GLIAC) and Michigan Tech (MTU) (13-14, 9-7 GLIAC) on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The NMU Wildcats enter the weekend on a three-game winning streak including most recently besting Wayne State in four sets. The Wildcat’s offense primarily runs through the duo of Jacqueline Smith and Meghan Meyer who each currently stand at 276 and 242 kills, respectively, but they will need to match up against one of the top attackers in the conference in the Lakers’ Mariana Velasque (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) who is having a top-ten season in program history in terms of kills, coming into the weekend with 360 on the season.
The MTU Huskies opened November with wins over Wayne State and Saginaw Valley, but they are still fighting to hold onto the fourth place position in the conference standings for coveted home-court advantage in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament. Lindy Oujiri leads the attack for the Huskies, averaging 3.62 kills per set. Meanwhile, the Lakers will need to always be aware of redshirt-junior Kaycee Meiners who is currently leading the GLIAC in total blocks with 119.
