After a week and a half hiatus thanks to winter weather, the Sault High Blue Devils returned to the mat Wednesday night for another conference dual, this time in Newberry.
Sam Kiekhaefer (144) put the Blue Devils on the board first, with a void. Brett Siesel (150) was pinned by Hayden O’Neil, making the score an even 6-6. Brady Rondeau (157) pinned Kamron Blau (3:26) and Newberry countered with a Kennedy DePew pin over the Sault’s Jonah Rishmawi (165), tying the score once again, 12-12. The Sault gained momentum with a pair of voids for Cody Russo (175) and Chris Kiekhaefer (190), and a pair of pins thanks to Calvin Aldridge (215) over Gabe Luck (5:27) and Sawyer Kuenzer (285) over Gabe Hamilton (5:03), pushing the score to 36-12. The Sault gave up six points in the 106 lb weight class and Chase Tracey (113) was pinned by Delaney Bliss, closing the gap to 36-24.
The Sault maintained the lead, winning the last three matches. Max VanDoren (126) won by void, Wyatt Peabody (132) beat Howard Bliss by points (2-0) and Will Ohman (138) closed out the night with a void.
The Sault (18-2) is now turning their efforts to the UP Championships in Marquette this weekend.
