At approximately 9:30 pm CST on 2/10/24, deputies from the Iron County Sheriff’s Department and troopers from the Michigan State Police, Iron Mountain Post, were dispatched to an explosion at 820 Cayuga St. in the City of Iron River.
Upon arrival, officers found the residence mostly destroyed with debris scattered as far as three blocks away. Iron River City Fire Dept and several other fire departments from Iron and Dickinson Counties were called to the scene and searched for potential victims. Troopers from neighboring posts along with MSP K9 units and the 8th District MSP Fire Investigator were also called to assist.
At this time there is one confirmed fatality, an 80-year-old male who had just moved into the home from Florida. While authorities do not suspect criminal activity at this time, the fire remains under investigation.. The Iron River City Police is leading this investigation with assistance from the MSP Fire Investigator.
