Sault Area High School senior Will Ohman will return to Ford Field in a few weeks to compete in the Division 2 144 lb weight class in the MHSAA State Finals. Ohman, along with three of his teammates senior Chris Kiekhaefer (190), and juniors Cody Russo (175) and Sawyer Kuenzer (285) left it all on the mat in Cadillac during the Regional 5-2 competition in Saturday, with the goal of advancing to the next level. Individual regional competition brings two districts together, generating eight-man double elimination style brackets in each weight class. At the end of the day, the top four wrestlers in each weight class punched their tickets to compete for a State title at Ford Field. While all the Blue Devils wrestlers had some great matches on Saturday, with Kiekhaefer and Kuenzer making it as far as the blood round, in the end there was only one who would move on.
In the quarterfinal match, Ohman lost to Luke Haney from Linden by decision (5-3). He battled his way to the podium with two close matches, first beating Garrett Clark from Fenton in a tie breaker (7-1), and then overtaking Payton Sampson of Cadillac (4-3). In the third place match, he met Haney again and lost by decision in another tie breaker (2-1). Ohman shared that he felt “a mix of happy and relief”, knowing he made it back to the State finals. With less than two weeks to prepare for his last high school tournament, Ohman plans to spend a lot of time working in neutral, and on his takedowns. Will’s parents Mitch and Anne are excited about the return trip as well. “We’re just really proud of him. We weren’t sure he was going to even be able to wrestle after he broke his collar bone (during football this fall), so the fact that he made it again is a testament of his determination and commitment to wrestling.”
Wrestling competition starts March 1 for all four divisions, along with the girls only brackets.
