On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at approximately 6:00p.m, Mackinac County Sheriff Deputies along with Garfield Twp. Fire Department, Garfield Twp. EMS, Hudson Township Fire, Michigan State Police and DNR responded to a report of a brush fire at a residence in Garfield Township.
Upon arrival Deputies were advised by fire personnel an elderly male subject had been found deceased amongst the area that had burned. A total of 8 acres of property was burned.
During the investigation it was discovered the male had been burning yard debris prior to the call for assistance. Deputies investigated the fire scene and it appeared that the fire spread out of control due to the dry and windy conditions.
Fire personnel were able to extinguish the brush fire without further incident.
Preliminary investigation appears to indicate this was a tragic accident and it does not appear to involve foul play.
This incident is still undergoing further investigation and there is no further information to release at this time.
Sheriff Wilk would like to remind everyone that it is very important to observe DNR burn conditions and to always take precautions to prevent these fires from spreading before you start the fire.
