MARQUETTE, MI – A state prison in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula called in reinforcements Wednesday after days of assaults targeting staff and fires in cells, officials said.
The Michigan Department of Corrections Emergency Response Team was deployed to Marquette Branch Prison to assist with the situation, WLUC reports. The prison is under restricted prison movement today for prisoner and staff safety.
On Monday and Tuesday, there were several assaults against staff and three fires in cells in the administrative segregation unit, the report said. During the early evening Wednesday, multiple prisoners in the unit started fires in their cells, leading to an evacuation of the unit. Two cells are out of service due to fire damage. Two officers and a prisoner were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation; the prisoner remains hospitalized.
