SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – All but one person was able to escape a house fire overnight in Sault Ste. Marie, according to a release penned by the chiefs of both the city’s fire and police departments.
We’re told when first responders arrived to the house shortly after 11:15 p.m., the fire had already spread to most of the home. Firefighters say the flames were controlled quickly, allowing search efforts to begin.
One person was reported to have been unaccounted for, which was corroborated with searchers’ discovery of a 39-year-old adult’s body found in the house. All other people believed to have been in the house at the time of the fire were accounted for.
The chiefs say the identity of the victim and other details are being withheld to protect the family and preserve evidence as their investigation continues into how the fire started. As of the time of the release, the chiefs said there is no confirmed cause of the fire.
