McMILLAN TWP., Mich. (WLUC) – The search is over for a missing 14-year-old after they went missing near Lake Superior State Campground Wednesday afternoon.
The Michigan State Police said its dive team recovered the victim late Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Luce County Sheriff’s Office, the suspected victim was swimming with a 15-year-old in Lake Superior when an undertow took the two into deeper water.
Responders say the 15-year-old was able to make it to shallow water, but the 14-year-old was taken farther from shore. Four to five-foot waves with winds out of the north were reported at the time.
The Coast Guard, Luce County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan DNR conservation officers conducted a search by boat and helicopter until it was halted until daylight.
Day two of the search continued Thursday with additional aid from the Michigan State Police Dive and Drone Team.
