2024 Miller Family Open Success

Local adaptive athlete, and soon to be Sault High senior Johnny Osborn competed in his second adaptive sports competition this summer. A weekend in Ann Arbor afforded Osborn the opportunity to spend time at the University of Michigan’s campus, learn about their Adaptive Student Athlete Program, meet paralympians, and compete in a number of track and field events. The Miller Family Open was an inaugural event, a collaboration with the university’s Adaptive Sports and Fitness program. Eleven colleges were represented, and for some athletes, this was a last chance opportunity to qualify for the USA Paralympic trials.

Osborn, who is considering the University of Michigan post graduation, competed in four different events. In the T34 classification, he placed second in the 100m, with a time of 25.59, first in the 200m, with a time of 49.42, and first in the 400m, with a time of 1:37.80. In the F34 classification, Osborn not only won the shot put, but had a significant personal record, with a throw of 5.85m. “My favorite part of this meet was having the opportunity to compete at the U of M track with my friends and having Mr. Boven (my former shot-put coach) be there for my 1 foot 5 inch PR.”

Osborn has one competition left this summer. He qualified for the Hartford Nationals in Hoover, Alabama next weekend. He has been working hard to raise funds to offset the costs to compete. He is willing to do odd jobs and is taking can donations as well. He can be reached via his mom, Andrea Osborn on Facebook.
