Benefits of Planting Fall Plug Trees and Bulbs: A Boost for Spring in Yooper Country!

“Beleaf” it, or not, fall is only a month away! Warm temperatures we saw in July and August
will begin to drop and our comfortable, cool temperatures Yoopers love will arrive with what we
hope to be a long fall. Fall also brings weather that is well suited for planting trees and fall bulbs.
The Chippewa Luce Mackinac Conservation District (CLMCD) is encouraging residents to take
advantage of the fall planting season by planning fall plug trees and flower bulbs. Fall offers
numerous benefits, setting the stage for vibrant spring blooms and a healthier landscape.
Why Fall is the Ideal Time for Planting

Fall is an excellent time to plant plug trees and bulbs, as the cooler temperatures and increased
moisture create ideal conditions for root establishment. When trees and bulbs are planted in the
fall, they can focus on developing a strong root system without the stress of summer heat. By the
time spring arrives, these plants are well-rooted and ready to thrive, leading to more vigorous
growth and an earlier display of flowers.

Environmental Benefits of Plug Trees
Plug trees, small and young trees grown in containers, are particularly suited for fall planting.
These trees are less prone to transplant shock and can establish more quickly in their new
environment. The roots have ample time to grow and anchor the tree before the ground freezes,
which is crucial for their survival through the winter. Once spring arrives, these trees can take
full advantage of the warmer weather and longer days to grow robustly.

Planting trees in the fall also contributes to local environmental health. Trees play a vital role in
improving air quality, providing habitat for wildlife, and stabilizing soil to prevent erosion.
Additionally, by planting native species, residents can help preserve the region’s natural
biodiversity and ensure that local ecosystems remain resilient.

Spring Blooms from Fall Bulbs
For those looking to add a splash of color to their gardens, fall is the time to plant bulbs that will
bloom in the spring. Daffodils, tulips, and alliums are just a few examples of bulbs that can be
planted in the fall for a stunning display when the snow melts. These bulbs require the cold
winter period to trigger their growth, making fall planting essential for their success.

Planting a variety of bulbs can ensure a continuous display of blooms from early spring through
late summer. By carefully planning and planting now, gardeners can enjoy a succession of
flowers that will brighten their yards and support local pollinators, such as bees and butterflies.
