SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men’s basketball team has released its 2024-25 schedule, as announced by Head Coach Steve Hettinga on Thursday.
The Lakers will open their 2024-25 campaign in the Sunshine State where they will face off against Carson-Newman and Gannon at the Small College Hall of Fame Classic on Nov. 2-3, hosted by Florida Southern in Lakeland, Fla. This will mark the first time that LSSU has competed at the event since it began in 2016, and they will be only the second GLIAC program showcased at the Classic (Ferris State 2017 & 2018).
The Lakers will then travel to Big Rapids, Mich. for a pair of contests against Great Midwest Athletic Conference foes, Lake Erie and Northwood, on Nov. 8-9 as part of the GLIAC/G-MAC Crossover.
LSSU will then return to the Soo for their home-opener on Nov. 15 when they host the Indianapolis Greyhounds. The Lakers defeated UIndy, the eventual top-seed and host team of the 2024 Midwest Regional Tournament, on the road last season by a score of 64-62.
On Nov. 21-22, the Lakers will be back on the road, facing two more Great Lakes Valley Conference opponents in USLM (University of St. Louis Missouri) and McKendree in Lebanon, Ill. before returning home to host Minnesota-Duluth in Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Nov. 26. Duluth earned the No. 3 seed in the Central region and boasted a win over the eventual national champions, Minnesota State-Mankato.
LSSU will then open up GLIAC play on the road in Big Rapids where they face the defending GLIAC Tournament champion Ferris State Bulldogs on Dec. 3 before their first encounter with GLIAC newcomers, Roosevelt, in Chicago two days later.
The Lakers round out their non-conference slate with a pair of winter break contests against Kuyper and Fanshawne in Sault Ste. Marie on Dec. 22 and 30.
LSSU opens 2025 with four straight home games, hosting the Wayne State Warriors and Saginaw Valley State on Jan. 2-4 prior to welcoming Davenport and Grand Valley State the following weekend.
They will then travel for bouts at Purdue Northwest and Wisconsin-Parkside on Jan. 16-18 before returning to the Soo for four more home contests. The Lakers host their Upper Peninsula rivals Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan on Jan. 23-5, and the following week, they will welcome Ferris State and Roosevelt to the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
LSSU closes out the regular season on the road for six of their last eight contests, traveling to Grand Valley State and Davenport on Feb. 6-8 before road bouts across the U.P. at Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech on Feb. 13-15. The Lakers will then host Parkside and Purdue Northwest on Feb. 20-22 with the latter serving as the backdrop for Senior Day and Alumni Weekend.
The Lakers will then close out the regular season at Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State on Feb. 27 and March 1.
