Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity Blue Devils Football teams made the trek down to St Clair Shores Lakeshore High School to play the Shorians on Friday to kick off their respective seasons.
In the varsity game, Lakeshore hit the scoreboard first with a touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good. The ball moved quite a bit on both sides, but there were no additional points scored in the quarter. Lakeshore 6; Sault 0.
In the second quarter, Lakeshore scored
another touchdown and the extra point kick was good. The Blue Devils got on the board before the end of the first half when senior Cale Bell ran the ball in for a touchdown. The two point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Lakeshore 13; Sault 6.
The halftime break was extended significantly due to severe thunderstorms moving through the area. At the start of the third quarter, Lakeshore scored again, and the extra point kick was good. The Blue Devils were back in the game when junior Jonah Rishmawi scooped up a Lakeshore fumble and ran it 40 yards to put the Sault on the board again. The two point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Lakeshore 20; Sault 12.
The Sault scored one final time in the fourth quarter when junior Caleb Klier ran the ball for a touchdown. The two point conversion attempt was unsuccessful. The final score was Lakeshore 20; Sault 18.
Defensively, Bell led the team in tackles with 12. Senior Evan Kennedy had 7 tackles and a pass defense. Junior Tristan Walcher had 5 tackles, and Rishmawi had the 40 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Bell led the Blue Devils on offense as well, running the ball 13 times for 62 yards and a touchdown, and catching 3 passes for 8 yards. Klier ran the ball 13 times for 60 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Brylon Van Elswyk was 8 for 17 passes for 67 yards and one interception.
Kennedy caught 2 passes for 25 yards, junior Trevin Maleport caught 1 pass for 23 yards, and Walcher caught 1 for 15 yards.
Freshman Carter Samuelson punted 4 times, averaging 30 yards per punt.
The varsity Blue Devils (0-1) will host the Cheboygan Chiefs (0-1) in another non-conference matchup at AJ VanCitters Field on Friday night.
The junior varsity Blue Devils battled some extreme heat during their game against the Shorians. In the first quarter, Lakeshore scored a touchdown on the third play of the game. The two point conversion was successful. The Blue Devils defense kept them from scoring again until much later in the second half when the Shorians scored another touchdown, and capitalized on a punt mishap with a safety, making the final score Lakeshore 16; Sault 0.
The JV team (0-1) will travel to Cheboygan on Thursday.
