SUDBURY, Ont. – Mason Walker had an impressive goal to go with a nice assist to help lift the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a narrow 2-1 victory over the Soo Eagles Friday in a well-played Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League affair at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
A fast-paced first period brought plenty of energy from both sides, yet did not provide any markers as the clubs hit the intermission still in search of a tally.
In the second stanza, Greater Sudbury broke the deadlock after coming out of the own end and saw Eidan Macartney whip in his third of the season off a nice back pass from Walker, on an in-close two-on-one.
Some wizardry from Walker in the final frame made it 2-0 as he snagged a play at the Eagles blueline then darted down the right wing where he made a crafty move before lifting a nifty backhand by Sault Ste. Marie netminder Mason Burkes.
The visitors came back to get on the board with eight and a half minutes remaining in regulation when Cooper Fredericks made a spin move just inside the Cubs zone that found Alex Povorozniouk, who in turned snapped shot past the blocker of goaltender Noah Beaulne.
Getting Burkes out late for an additional skater, the Eagles looked to tie it and force overtime, but the hosts held firm defensively to collect the win.
The outcome sees Greater Sudbury improve to 4-1-1-1 on the campaign while the Soo slipped to 1-2-0-0 in the close setback.
