Blue Devils Soccer Playoff Action

It’s playoff season for Boys Soccer, and this past Thursday the Sault High Boys Soccer team traveled down to Gaylord for the start of the MSHAA state playoffs. It was a battle of the Gaylord Blue Devils and the Sault Blue Devils. A rematch from last year, this game pitted these two teams against each other in the opening round. Gaylord jumped up to a 1-0 lead around the 15-minute mark in the opening half. Sault High coach Alan Macarthur shared “It was kind of a blooper shot. It was high but not hard and caught our goalkeeper off guard. Nonetheless it was on net and a good goal.” Both teams continued to battle it out with Gaylord taking that 1-0 lead into the half. Throughout the second half Gaylord continued to get shots, but it wasn’t until under ten minutes to go in the game that Gaylord would get their second goal. “Gaylord worked hard to get that second goal, and it was kind of a pin ball type of reaction. It was a little chaotic in front of our net and I think a half dozen players kicked that ball from both teams before it went in.” MacArthur added, “We knew we were the underdog going into this game and our game plan was to slow the more experienced Gaylord offense down and force shots from odd angles and be sound defensively.”

Sault High is one of the few schools that doesn’t have a JV or Freshman soccer program. “Experience is always going to be a factor for us. To put that into perspective our starting lineup consisted of three first year players, four second year players, two third year players and two four year players. Considering that, this team really held their own throughout this game and the entire season.”

The Blue Devils roster this season includes Brett Siesel, a Senior and first year player, Nick Wood, a Senior and fourth year player, Anthony Abramson, a Freshman and first year player, Jordan Doghmi, a Senior and fourth year player, Aiden Rath, a Sophomore and second year player, Joel Rice, a Freshman and first year player, Parker Rath, a Sophomore and second year player, Cole Gendron, a Freshman and first year player, Cam Gagnon, a Junior and third year player, Dean Roe, a Sophomore and second year player, Reece Gibson, a Sophomore and second year player, William Swedene, a Sophomore and second year player, Nate Sommers, a Junior and third year player, Calvin Swedene, a Senior and second year player, Zayan Mamud, a Freshman and first year player, Aiden Burtt, a Junior and first year player, Jeremiah Clark, a Senior and third year player, Mason Berry, a Senior and third year player, Ethan Clark, a Sophomore and second year player, Finley Johnson, a Sophomore and first year player, Noah Weber, a Senior and fourth year player. “Next year we will have a larger group of players with 20-30 games under their belt which should help the program. We are going to miss this year’s seniors but as a team we are already looking forward to next season.”
