Boys Soccer Wraps Up Regular Season

Sault High Boys Varsity soccer team recently competed in their last four games of regular season play. All four of those games were on the road.

The Sault traveled to Big Bay De Noc for a match and came out with a 12-1 victory. Coach Alan MacArthur noted “Oddly enough, everything seemed to go our way tonight. We haven’t had a lot of luck this year. The boys played well offensively and defensively for the entire game. Big Bay lost a lot of players last year so it’s a re-build year for them and we know exactly how that feels.”

Next on the schedule was a game on the road in Cheboygan, but it was cancelled. MacArthur indicated “Cheboygan apparently had issues fielding a team for the day we were supposed to play them”.

The Sault then traveled to Marquette to face the team that beat them 8-0 during a home match up earlier this season. In a game where Marquette held the Sault in their own end for much of the game, the Blue Devils were able to go into the half tied at 1-1. MacArthur noted “Marquette’s plan of attack had us on our heels for a lot of that game but we didn’t panic and held our own. Our guys played what I would consider their best all-around game of the season. Marquette was able to get 2 more goals in the second half, but we made them work for those goals”. The final score was Marquette 3 and the Sault 1.

The Blue Devils traveled the scenic route to Houghton to play the Gremlins, where the Gremlins beat the Sault 8-0. MacArthur said “We were playing against Houghton and a 20 plus mile an hour wind and unfortunately we had to start the game against the wind. We started off slow and Houghton was up 3-0 before we knew it. It seemed like every time we dribbled or tried a pass the ball it would start rolling back towards our own net because of that wind. That wind was definitely an advantage for the other team. Between the wind and Houghton’s attack we were never able to mount an offensive threat. We started to press the action in the second half but an unlucky bounce and a break away allowed Houghton to get their last goal and go on for the win”.

The coaches were hoping to schedule one last game to make up for the Cheboygan cancellation before playoffs start. The Sault will face Gaylord in Gaylord on Thursday the 10th at 6:00pm for the opening round of state playoffs.
